If you haven’t found an excuse to get to Gurney’s on Goat Island yet this summer, now is your opportunity. Gurney’s is hosting a pop-up sushi experience, Sushi on Jones, from now until September 2nd. Its first ever hotel residency, Sushi on Jones is making waves on the island, and bringing even more attention to Gurney’s as a summer hot spot and must-visit.
Last weekend I had the pleasure of spending a night experiencing Sushi on Jones for myself. My group and I were greeted by the hostess and quickly seated at a fire-pit lounge overlooking the pool cabanas, and Newport bridge at sunset in the harbor beyond. We browsed the impressive menu and decided on the Sake Temaki special with king salmon, and yuzu kosho, wrapped in a playful nori cone; a refreshing change-up from our usual sushi roll routine. We ordered some lean tuna nigiri as the perfect accompaniment. To finished off our salty cravings, we snagged an order of Gurney’s truffle fries. The flavor and presentation of the sushi was by far the most savory, delicious, and impressive of any my friends and I had tried before; and trust me when I say, this is a group that KNOWS sushi.
We topped off with mudslides, IPAs, and cider before walking the grounds, taking pictures with the bridge at sunset as our backdrop, and saying hello to as many of the puppies romping around the lawn as we could. I highly recommend springing for Sushi on Jones as your next date night locale before summer’s end. A special treat for sure, but we promise you will find it worth every penny.
